Florida Recovers From Hurricanes Aided by MARCOR Remediation

Crews from Six States Join Forces for Disaster Recovery Efforts

9/24/2004––The State of Florida suffered three hurricanes in short succession, but recovery is well underway with the efforts of MARCOR Remediation, Inc., Hunt Valley, Md., which has held a Florida contractor’s license for the past 10 years. Skilled laborers and supervisors from six MARCOR operations are cutting downed tree limbs, ripping out waterlogged building materials, shoveling out sand, and more.

Hurricanes Charley, Frances and Ivan caused catastrophic wind and flood damage in spite of preventive measures. According to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the first two hurricanes alone generated nearly 29 million tons of debris. Roofs and walls were torn away, power lines wrecked, basements filled with sand and debris, and damaged cars strewn in unlikely places. Meanwhile, Hurricane Jeanne looms off the Atlantic Coast, and Florida is in her projected path.

Before it all started, MARCOR workers mobilized to help with preventive measures — sandbagging and boarding up retail and commercially owned properties. Now, MARCOR crews from Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, Maryland and Massachusetts are feverishly working in flood-damaged Vero Beach, West Palm Beach, Jensen Beach, Orlando, Jacksonville, Miami, Key West, Tampa, Pensacola, Ft. Walton Beach, Destin and surrounding areas to restore order. More than 100 people are working up to 14-hour days to perform interior demolition/gutting; dehumidification and dry-down services; removal of sand, trees and debris; stabilization of damaged structures; and securing of uninhabitable properties to prevent looting. They are also preparing for the onslaught of Jeanne.

Property owners in need of preparatory measures or disaster recovery work should call Mike Burke, MARCOR Regional Manager, at 1-800-248-0571 (emergency phone number) or 1-800-496-5115 (emergency pager).

MARCOR’s diverse emergency response disaster recovery services include safe removal, transport and disposal of industrial and hazardous waste. Applied techniques include high-pressure power washing; high-pressure vacuuming; solvent, surfactant and steam cleaning; highly controlled abrasive blasting for dust-free removal of dirt, paint, coatings and other materials from concrete, masonry and metal surfaces; and a number of other, specialized methods.

Abatement of asbestos and heavy metals, or mechanical hygiene services to remediate dust, bacteria, mold spores or other microorganisms in a building’s duct systems or on structural components, are frequently combined with cleaning and vacuuming services. MARCOR is also very experienced in handling contaminated and/or flood-damaged books, as well as legal, historic or other important documents for libraries, courthouses, businesses and government offices.
