Florida Hurricane Recovery Work Spurs Marcor Remediation to Open New Offices

Sees Need for Coupling of Restoration and Environmental Services

1/20/2005––Spurred by the demand for building restoration and environmental services that followed the four successive hurricanes to hit Florida in 2004, MARCOR Remediation, Inc. has opened two new offices in the cities of Palm Beach and Pensacola.

“We believe MARCOR can make a significant contribution to Florida’s recovery following the catastrophic events of last year,” said Michael Burke, MARCOR vice president and regional manager. “From the time we responded with preventive measures before the hurricanes hit, such as sandbagging and boarding up retail and commercially owned properties, to our restoration services since then, we have seen the vast amount of work that must be done in the years ahead.”

MARCOR, headquartered in Hunt Valley, MD, has held a Florida contractor’s license for the past 10 years. Many MARCOR customers in the state solicited the company’s services in advance of and following the hurricanes. MARCOR crews, comprising 200 people working 14-hour days, came to the flood-damaged areas from Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, Texas, Maryland and Massachusetts. Since then, the company has been called upon by many other Florida businesses, which led to the decision to which led to the decision to expand the company's Florida presence.

According to Burke, removing the water-damaged building materials is just the first stage of a restoration project. “Every situation requires a specific solution. This could include interior demolition and gutting and dehumidification and dry-down services. For some, cleanup has involved the removal of trees, debris, and sand. The force of the hurricanes brought sand into front yards, garages, and parking lots,” he said. “And once structures are stabilized and protected from looting, restoration work must begin.”

What sets MARCOR apart from other builders and contractors is the company’s full range of environmental contracting services, including mold remediation. “We've found that mold growth is rampant. Proper remediation requires the services of an environmental contractor with extensive experience in this area,” he said. Other diverse emergency response disaster recovery services could include the identification and safe removal, transport, and disposal of industrial and hazardous materials like asbestos and heavy metals. In addition, the company is asked to handle contaminated and flood-damaged books, as well as legal, historic, or other important documents for libraries, courthouses, and business and government offices.
