MARCOR Remediation: First Licensed Mold Remediation Contractor in Texas

New State Law Sets Standard Work Practices

11/30/2004––The Texas Department of State Health Services has designated MARCOR Remediation, a national environmental services company, as the first mold remediation and assessment company to be licensed under a new Texas state law.

“We welcome the new licensing requirement,” said Mark Sanders, general manager of MARCOR’s Austin, TX, office. “It enables us to set ourselves apart from unscrupulous businesses with little knowledge or experience tackling mold remediation. It officially certifies us as qualified to perform the work.” MARCOR has been involved in the relatively new service industry for more than 10 years.

The new law, which will require all mold remediation contractors to be licensed by January 1, 2005, creates a standard set of work practices that must be followed by professionals. The Texas Department of State Health Services program includes licensing fees for individuals, companies and their employees, and the creation of a uniform code of ethics to be followed. Licensing involves a number of activities, including a competency examination. The Department has the authority to enforce the licensing requirements and to investigate complaints about mold-related activities. Texas maintains a website that answers consumers’ questions about the program at www.tdh.state.tx.us/beh/mold/moldfaqs.htm.

MARCOR has been actively handling mold remediation concerns throughout the state, including projects at the Texas Building and Procurement Commission, Texas State University, University of Texas at Austin, and the Dallas Independent School District, as well as numerous commercial and institutional properties.

The new state licensing requirement has been lauded by a number of respected professional organizations such as the American Industrial Hygiene Association, which commended the state for putting together the rules. “AIHA members in Texas and around the country share your interest and commitment to address an issue that has received high-profile media attention, considerable litigation nationwide, and impacts the health of countless individuals,” said Thomas G. Grumbles, CIH, president of the association in his review of the proposed rules.

MARCOR's office is located at 904 Wagon Trail, Austin, TX 78758 and can be reached at 877-627-2672. Mark Sanders, the general manager, can also be reached at mark.sanders@marcor.com.
