MARCOR Remediation honored for its work on ground zero clean-up

Cited for 2002 Project of the Year

12/6/2002––MARCOR Remediation, Inc., Hunt Valley, MD, is being honored with the 2002 Project of the Year Award presented by New York Construction News for its work on the clean-up at Ground Zero following the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001.

McGraw-Hill Construction Publications is citing the team leaders, contractors, suppliers, unions, owners, and consultants who proceeded with the dignified recovery of victims' remains and forensic evidence, at a ceremony at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square on December 11.

MARCOR Remediation, an environmental contracting services company with a long history of handling emergency response situations and planned remediation projects, was the first contractor to respond at the Fresh Kills Landfill where the WTC debris was transported. It was also the last contractor to leave the site. Working 24 hours a day, seven days a week for 10 months, MARCOR processed the debris for evidence, including victims' remains, parts of the jet engines, and items down to ½ inch in size, such as wedding rings.

MARCOR's crew was on the Fresh Kills site, meeting with New York Police and Fire Departments, the FBI, and the CIA, by September 17. "That was when I first realized the job was going to be significantly more than clean-up," said Mark Klotzbach, senior project manager. Klotzbach and (Mr.) Lynn Dewees, account executive based at MARCOR's Downingtown, PA, office, will be attending the Awards Breakfast in New York City.

"We'll present MARCOR and the other team members with the 'Hero at Ground Zero' medal they deserve in recognition of their hard work on the project," said Heather Hatfield, McGraw-Hill publisher. "This is a project that has helped change the image of our industry and the people involved should be forever proud."

All of Ground Zero was considered a hazardous work environment, and a potentially dangerous work environment. At Fresh Kills Landfill, MARCOR personnel worked for more than 63,000 man-hours with only one recordable incident.

MARCOR Remediation, founded in 1980, performs a full-range of services, which include asbestos and lead hazard abatement, mold remediation, wastewater treatment, structural decommissioning and demolition, soil stabilization, emergency spill response, and storage tank management. Each of the company's 15 offices is staffed with the necessary mix of senior technical management, regulatory compliance experts, and experienced HAZMAT labor force. More information about the company can be obtained by calling 800-547-0128 or by visiting the website www.marcor.com.
