MARCOR Remediation Takes First Step For ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition"

Removes potentially dangerous asbestos before demolition began

5/30/2006––Before the volunteer team of builders and subcontractors for ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” could begin their work renovating a Philadelphia home, a crew from MARCOR Remediation, a leading national environmental contractor, made the site safe for demolition. Technicians from MARCOR’s Greater Philadelphia office, garbed in full protective suits, gloves, and respirators, removed several hundred square feet of vinyl asbestos tile from the Py family home in Northeast Philadelphia.

The presence of the asbestos and the possibility that it could cause cancer and other neurological problems led the grandparents of three orphaned children to apply for the “Extreme Makeover” of their home. After the asbestos was contained and removed, the home was demolished, and a new home will be built in its place by the construction firm, Dewey Companies.

“MARCOR was more than happy to contribute its time and skills to the Py family, who were in such desperate need for a new home,” said Jack Bally, MARCOR project manager. “The contractor, knowing our long history as a pioneer in the field of asbestos remediation, chose us to handle this first essential step in the demolition and construction of the home.”

The MARCOR team was the first subcontractor on site the first day, right after electricians and plumbers had turned off power and water and movers have taken out the family’s possessions. The lower level of the Py home was sealed and contained with heavy plastic sheeting, according to EPA and the City of Philadelphia regulations. The air in the work site was constantly monitored and an air lock was erected, which was used for entering and exiting the work area. The air was filtered using HEPA filter negative machines.

Next, using a special process employing dry ice to shrink the asbestos tiles, the tile was removed. The hazardous waste was wetted, double bagged, and disposed in an EPA-approved landfill. While the barriers were in place, an independent third party air-monitoring firm obtained air samples and performed final air clearance testing.

The episode of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” which featured the work of MARCOR Remediation, was aired in April.
