What to do After a Flood: Advice from MARCOR Remediation
9/8/2006–Hunt Valley, MD–MARCOR Remediation, Inc. provides a few common-sense safety rules for the workers in the construction and demolition industries to keep in mind after a flood:
- Make sure the power has been shut off at the main breaker box before you enter a flooded area.
- Throw away any food items that have been touched by floodwater, even if they are wrapped in plastic.
- If you observe or hear the building or structural components shift, get out.
- If you smell leaking gas or are unsure, don’t ignite anything. Notify your utility company or other emergency resource.
- Before starting a generator, shut off the main breaker to prevent backfeed of electrical energy into power lines.
- Operate diesel-powered generators and pumps outdoors (not enclosed) to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
- Wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) for flood cleanup.
