MARCOR Remediates Mold at San Diego Naval Medical Center
7/11/2007–Cerritos, CA–MARCOR Remediation, Inc., a national environmental services contractor, has just completed a large-scale, seven-month mold remediation project at the San Diego Naval Medical Center involving the cleaning and rebuilding of portions of the facility's HVAC system. The work was handled by MARCOR's Los Angeles and Southern California office, situated in Cerritos, CA.
MARCOR crews worked in phases on four, five-story nursing towers, as well as in the penthouse mechanical equipment rooms. They performed interior demolition of certain contaminated building components, such as the HVAC system's sound attenuators, followed by reconstruction services. The facility's towers were closed down, one at a time, for the remediation and rebuilding activities.
The presence of mold in the duct system was discovered after a routine inspection last fall. Although the hospital's deputy commander reported that the level of mold was lower than in outdoor air and that no related injuries had occurred, the hospital still decided to take action as a precautionary measure.
Included in the work done by MARCOR was the removal of contaminated interior fiberglass duct insulation in certain areas of the supply and return ducts and Variable Air Volume (VAV) boxes. The crew applied new thermal/acoustic insulation on the exterior of sections of the ducts and installed elastomeric insulation in areas where interior duct insulation was required.
During the project, workers attired in personal protective gear isolated the areas where mold was present with plastic sheeting, establishing containment, followed by the construction of a decontamination chamber. Negative air pressure was established with HEPA-equipped filtration devices. All affected materials were properly disposed in accordance with regulatory protocol.
