MARCOR Deconstructs 38 Buildings at Aberdeen Proving Ground
U.S. Army site will gain green space.
1/12/2010–Baltimore, MD–The U.S. Army base at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, will lose 38 outdated and underutilized military buildings and gain some wide-open, environmentally friendly green space instead. MARCOR Environmental, a nationwide specialty contractor with headquarters in Hunt Valley, Maryland, is systematically removing all friable and non-friable asbestos, demolishing the structures, and recovering reusable scrap materials for recycling. Most of the larger structures and/or structural components are masonry, steel, and concrete. The work is expected to be complete in June of this year.
MARCOR is performing the deconstruction work (132,000 square feet in area) under a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Northeastern Region, Multiple Award Task Order Contract, or MATOC, for one base year and four renewable option years. The deconstruction process to recover and segregate reusable building materials, including some tin and wood, will drastically reduce the amount of material that would typically be transported to a landfill. The Aberdeen work also includes abatement of approximately 27,250 square feet of asbestos floor tile and mastic, which must be removed first, then packaged and disposed at an EPA-regulated landfill.
According to MARCOR Vice President Tim Miller, "Approximately 112,345 square feet of concrete slab will be removed and crushed for reuse as part of this project. The work requires specialty deconstruction equipment, such as an excavator-mounted concrete processor, grapples, steel sheers, and concrete breakers. We will also backfill, seed, and restore the affected areas to match the surrounding topography."
MARCOR Environmental, founded in 1980, performs a full range of environmental contracting services. Services include industrial cleaning, asbestos and lead hazard abatement, mold remediation, plant/process decommissioning, demolition, soil and groundwater remediation, gun range remediation, storage tank management, disaster recovery work, and many other specialty project types.
