MARCOR Performs Parkade Building Legionella Cleanup

8/6/2003––MARCOR Remediation Inc. (MARCOR) is performing decontamination procedures for suspected Legionella in the Parkade Building, which houses several state, county, and city offices, as well as a day care service.

On Friday August 1, a suspected case of Legionnaire's Disease was reported to the Camden County Department of Health. The disease, which is caused by the Legionella bacterium, was thought to have possibly originated in the Parkade Building. That same day, MARCOR contacted Mr. Joseph Bennardi, the building owner, to offer assistance. The Camden County Department of Health had tested suspect areas in the building; however, the results would not be available for several days. Although the health department did not close the building, Mr. Bennardi felt it prudent to mitigate the possible hazards as soon as possible. He hired MARCOR to perform decontamination procedures.

On Monday August 4, MARCOR's project manager and operations manager arrived at the site to begin mobilization procedures. Then the MARCOR crew arrived and began decontamination. Areas where there was likely to be aerosolized water were cleaned using industry accepted practices as a precautionary measure.

The building owner hired High Safety Consulting Services, Ltd., a comprehensive indoor air quality and safety-consulting firm, to perform post-cleanup sampling. According to High Safety's certified industrial hygienist (CIH), preliminary testing showed no Legionella DNA to be present.

MARCOR is a privately held, full-service environmental contracting company with offices nationwide. Recently MARCOR has been involved with the Hart Senate anthrax cleanup, Abramson Center for Jewish Life Legionella decontamination, and is currently working on anthrax cleanup in the former AMI Building in Boca Raton, Florida.
