Perhaps thousands of municipal and industrial water towers contain hazardous lead-based paint, which was used for decades to paint homes, factories, office buildings, and schools.

Tightening federal and state regulations designed to reduce or eliminate lead exposure to small children will require lead-hazard abatement in many facilities, including water towers. One such tower which required lead-hazard abatement is located in Baltimore County, Maryland, where it towers nearly 165 feet above the rolling countryside. MARCOR performed lead abatement on the interior and exterior of the 50-year-old structure.

Water tower lead-hazard abatement requires structural skills and tank expertise. It would be similar to hazard abatement in an underground storage tank one perched atop a 16-story building!

First, scaffolding was constructed up to the top of the tower. Then, the tower was fully enclosed in reinforced plastic sheeting to contain the lead-paint debris as it was removed.

The project required 20 employees to work approximately one year on the tower. Some 45,000 square feet of surface area was involved in the abatement project. The project was the first of its kind in the area.
