Historic preservation projects involve special concerns. MARCOR has developed or adapted equipment and techniques to handle the demands of particularly delicate jobs.

In most asbestos abatement/reinsulation projects, for example, the contractor must demolish walls or ceilings to access the material behind or above them. But, when it comes to a historic building, the walls and ceiling cannot be damaged, and the contractor must take extraordinary measures to gain access for renovation. Each job presents unique challenges. When appropriate, we design innovative, sometimes nontraditional solutions to solve a customer’s unique environmental problem.

Asbestos paint removal

Removal of asbestos-based paint requires special considerations, especially when an historic structure is involved. The historic facade of a veterans hospital necessitated use of a caustic paint stripping agent. Technicians worked from elaborate hydraulic scaffolding on a contained, 50-foot-long lift platform. After the spray-applied agent had set for 24 hours, MARCOR’s experts carefully hand-scraped the paint, which was then drummed and disposed of as asbestos waste. Remaining residue was rinsed off via a 3,000 psi pressure washer. Collected rinse water was treated (filtered down to five microns) before discharge.
